Whilst wedding cakes have been around since the Roman Empire, wedding cake toppers are a much newer tradition.
Starting in the US before the American Civil War they rapidly gained in popularity and around 1920 was when the first little figurines started to spear. Up until then the cake toppers could have been bells, flowers or even a photo of the happy couple.
The wedding cake is so much more than just a 'cake' - the tradition of serving the cake to guests began in ancient Rome and various cultures and ethnic traditions.
The Romans actually used a more break like cake which was broken over the brides head for good luck.
